About Shambololo

Shambololo is a quiet camping area beside a dam, best for guests who bring their own tent and camping gear. The site is aimed at self-sufficient campers who want firepit evenings, fishing and nature watching rather than built accommodation.

This is Shambololo's main campsite — a peaceful haven where you can relax under the lapa, enjoy a barbecue at the braai area, and spend lazy afternoons in the shade. It's the perfect spot for happy camping, with plenty of space to unwind and connect with nature.

Facilities

Lapa (Shade)

Rest comfortably under the tin-roofed lapa during the day. Tables and benches are provided.

Water Point

Fresh water available on site for drinking (at your own risk), washing, and cooking.

Shower & Toilet Block

Clean shared ablution facilities with flush toilets and hot showers.

Hot Shower

Hot water available from the donkey boiler system. Three showers available. If the boiler is not running, cold water showers are available. Ask the manager to start it.

Flush Toilet

Well-maintained shared toilet facilities on site. Three toilets available.

Washbasin

Convenient hand-washing stations near ablution areas.

Braai Area

Space for braai/barbecue with braai stands. Firewood for cooking is prepped and lit for you, included in the K150 nightly rate.

Firepit

Communal firepit perfect for evening gatherings and stargazing. Firewood is set up and lit for you at no extra cost — this fire-starting service, for both the firepit and cooking, is included in the K150 per-night rate.

Rubbish disposal areas to keep the campsite clean.

Secure perimeter with fenced and gated entrance at the facility gate. (Note: The campsite is not immediately next to the gate.)

From Lusaka: Take the Great East Road (T1) south towards Chirundu. After approximately 40-45 minutes (about 50km from Lusaka city center), look for the turn-off to Shambololo on the left side of the road. The exact location is marked on Google Maps above. Always contact Clever in advance for the latest directions and to confirm the gate will be open.

How to Book

Open Friday/Saturday and holiday-eves only Shambololo is closed on weekdays. It's open only the day before a weekend — Friday and Saturday — or the day before a public holiday. Confirm your date with Clever before planning your trip.

Rates & capacity Overnight camping is by reservation, but walk-ins are welcome on the day if there's space. It's K150 per person per night, limited to 3 groups overnight — each of the 3 gets its own roofed, open-sided shelter (with a table and chairs), a BBQ grill, and a firepit for the night.

Day visits are also K150 and are not limited to 3 groups — as many day groups can come as the shaded, open ground can fit. One catch: if day visitors are on site, the roofed shelters are reserved for them during daylight hours. Even with an overnight booking, you may need to relax in the open shade until evening, when a shelter frees up.

Agree on arrival time

The gate is kept locked. Clever needs to know when to expect you — agree on a window so he can meet you at the entrance.

Pay on arrival

K150 per person, whether camping overnight or visiting for the day, paid on the day. Bring cash — there is no card machine on site.
